Ending "The Middle East"
An article for Geographical Magazine on how the term shapes expectations
A short Köprü here, just to share an opinion piece I wrote recently for the Royal Geographic Society magazine, Geographical.
It’s a look at what we hear when we hear the words “The Middle East”, who and which groups most often use these words, and if this (geographically, culturally suspect) concept maybe does us more harm than good, whether that is advancing solutions in Palestine or simply promoting cultural understanding.
Although the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza by the Israelis is now over 30,000, and all 2million people in the Gaza Strip are displaced, I hope that even with the immediacy of such horror, it can still seem valuable to consider ways of thinking that perhaps subtly entrench ideas of conflict in our consciousness.
